Finding the right wetsuit for a child is rarely simple. Parents worry about getting the warmth right without buying something so thick it restricts movement, about a fit that’s snug but not chafing, and about a zip their little one can actually manage. There’s the question of whether a wetsuit is even worth it for a child who’ll outgrow it, and the safety concern of keeping an eye on a small swimmer once they’re out in the water.Â
At Coral Wetsuits, our kids’ range is designed around exactly these concerns. Made from soft, flexible metalite neoprene in vibrant colours and playful designs, our wetsuits keep children warm and comfortable while making them easier to spot in the water. Whether it’s a first surfing lesson or a family day at the beach.

Our Range of Kids Wetsuits
We make two main wetsuits for children aged 2 to 14 years, each suited to a different kind of water adventure.
Kids Surfing Wetsuits
Our Kids Surfing Wetsuit is the full-length suit built for budding grommets and active days in the water. It’s the right choice for children spending longer sessions in cooler conditions. Surf lessons, ocean swims and beach days where staying warm matters most.
What makes it stand out:
- 3mm metalite neoprene for superior warmth, comfort and freedom of movement (2mm thickness for ages 2 to 6 for easier wear)
- Gauge 10 YKK back zipper for easy on and off
- Smooth-cut neckline and adjustable collar for a snug, chafe-free fit
- Glued and flatstitched seams for robust, all-day durability
- Vibrant colours and playful designs that boost visibility and safety in the water
- Available in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 8L, 10, 12 and 14
Kids Tunics
Our Kids Tunic is the lighter, more flexible option for warmer water and shorter sessions. It’s ideal for younger children, swimming lessons, splashing around and any day where ease of movement and easy wear matter more than maximum insulation.
What makes it stand out:
- 2mm metalite neoprene for warmth, flexibility and comfort
- Gauge 10 YKK back zipper for simple on and off
- Adjustable collar with smooth-cut neckline for comfort
- All seams glued and flatstitched for a robust finish
- Vibrant colours and playful designs that keep kids visible and stylish in the water
- Available in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 8L, 10, 12 and 14

FAQs
What is the best thickness wetsuit for a child?
The best thickness depends on the water and the child’s age. A 2mm wetsuit is typically sufficient in warmer water, providing adequate insulation without restricting movement, which is why we use 2mm for our younger sizes (ages 2–6) to make them easier to wear. For cooler conditions and longer sessions, a 3mm suit offers more warmth. Because water temperatures vary throughout the year, especially around Cape Town, we offer kids’ wetsuits in different thicknesses to suit every season.
Are kids’ wetsuits worth it?
Yes. A wetsuit is far more than a stylish piece of gear. It’s a protective layer. Children lose heat faster than adults because their smaller bodies cool more quickly, so a wetsuit helps retain body heat, allowing them to stay in the water longer and more comfortably.Â
Beyond warmth, it also offers protection against sunburn and abrasions, and the buoyancy of neoprene can give young or novice swimmers and surfers extra confidence. Investing in a quality, well-made wetsuit means better warmth, comfort and durability over time.
Is a 2mm or 3mm wetsuit better?
Neither is simply “better”.It comes down to conditions. A 2mm suit is the better pick for warmer water and younger children, keeping things light and easy to wear while still providing insulation.
A 3mm suit is the better choice for cooler water and longer time in the sea, as the extra thickness improves its insulating properties. For Cape Town’s changing water temperatures, many families find it helpful to choose based on the season and how long their child will be in the water.
Should kids wear anything under a wetsuit?
Yes, a swimming costume. A swimsuit worn underneath makes the wetsuit easier to pull on and off, keeps things comfortable, and is all your child needs under their Coral suit.
